Curated by Catherine Lampert The Mystery of Appearance: Conversations Between Ten British Post-War Painters brought together figures such as Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, Frank Auerbach and Richard Hamilton in a major new survey of painting in London after World War II, seeking to reconcile previously conceived polarities between the School of London and British Pop Art.
Lampert's major new essay was interspersed with biographies of the artists and photographs by Jorge Lewinsky, among others. Tom Hunt's accompanying essay surveyed the influence of these painters on contemporary artists.
The covers and spine feature a detail from a heavily textured canvas by Frank Auerbach with typography in silver foil.
Texts by Catherine Lampert and Tom Hunt.
